WHAT ARE YOU DOING AT THE END OF JUNE?

by Bill Cumming

DO YOU?

Experience that you are loved absolutely and without condition?

If you do, the recreation of that experience will allow you to be at complete peace, no matter what the circumstances.

Experience that you live in a miracle?

If you do, you know that no matter what is going on around you, with others, your body or the world, you can be at peace.

Experience that there is work to be done?

If you do, you will know that it will never be done unless a larger number of people experience what you do.

“The last of the freedoms – to choose one’s attitude in any given set of
circumstances, to choose one’s own way.”

– Viktor Frankl

Nancy Kopack, Reflections on “What One Person Can Do” and the “Advanced Exploration”

Significance of this work – start to end

Every school year would begin with goal setting about what we wanted to accomplish for the upcoming year. My first goal was always the same, to keep myself in balance throughout the year. I had some idea of what that meant, but seldom spelled it out specifically, more of a general guideline about what I hoped for than specific steps. The goal was about me, so I could do my job, be available for others the way I wanted to be.

Participating in What One Person Can Do gave me specific, concrete experiences to reference about how to take care of myself, for myself that I can come back to when I start tilting away from myself. It also gave me language to use with others to tell them I care about their well being and happiness, a desire to be more explicit about that and a freedom to do so. Through the activities, readings and discussions I developed an understanding of creating equanimity for myself and started to develop a knowledge base and skills to share with others about how they can do the same. If one embraces this work, universal, very big and very important ideas are brought into focus and made attainable for everyday practice which can be life changing for the individual and those around that individual.

I feel like I am still developing my understanding of this work. That does not stop with the end of a formal meeting process, but will continue as I continue my journey, referring back to the readings and activities and, hopefully, providing the opportunity for others to develop equanimity.

Appropriate value for what charged?

Yes and no. Yes, because I determined what I could afford from a cash and personal energy point of view. No, because the gift of having this body of knowledge to refer to and share with others is priceless.

Nancy is Director of Youth Build Biddeford, A former Principal and teacher for thirty years and now a convener of “What One Person Can Do.”
