Presence

A couple of days ago, I went to the grocery store and the cashier in the checkout line had  an absolutely electric, genuine smile, asked how I was doing and really meant it. It was spectacular!

Need I say more?

More to Learn

It struck me full force, while watching the events in Washington this week, that the election of Barack Obama as President of the United States is about the character of a man, the strength of a family and sense of hope and possibility. I remember with the same sense of awe, the character of the parents of children who attended that first summer program that became Upward Bound. I wondered why these generous, gracious parents would trust anyone who looked like their oppressors?

Compulsions

There is a wonderful little bakery in Litchfield, Maine called The Black Crow Bakery. With clients and company coming today, I bought a few each of their spicy molasses and semi-sweet, chocolate chip cookies. They are really delicious. Today, most were served or delivered. A few are wrapped ready for the freezer. This is the first time I remember not eating one simply because they were in the house.

I wonder what triggers the creation of compulsions so strong they can last a lifetime?
